Christ's Lutheran Church was founded in January 1903. Christ's Lutheran Church is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod.
The church was originally located in a rented building on Plymouth Avenue in Oreland before the congregation purchased the Pennsylvania Avenue location and built the church that exists today.
On November 22, 1959 the newly constructed Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church on Pennsylvania Avenue was officially dedicated.
Some of our members will still remember when Christ's Church was on Plymouth Avenue "on the other side of the railroad tracks". It was a nice little church that had served the congregation well for many years. But by the 1950's the congregation had outgrown the building and the house next door used for Sunday School classes. So a building committee was formed and it was decided to build a new church on Pennsylvania Avenue.
In 2010 we received donations from the families of two former members related to the building of our church on Pennsylvania Avenue.
John R. Browning served on the building committee for the new church both in 1958 and again when the classroom addition was added in 1965. John and his family were members for many years. In going through John's effects his daughters Judith Browning Lunde and Nancy Browning Avery discovered church building specifications and blueprints as well as letters and building committee meeting notes. They have donated them to the church.
Bud Spengler was an active member of the church for a number of years and was known for his service as a youth advisor in the 1960's. Two of the church's youth from that era Martin (Marty) Gehlhaus and Carol Spengler later married. They recently came across over 100 slides that Carol's father took from 1959 through 1961 and have donated them to the church.
The Spengler slides include some exterior and interior pictures of the old Plymouth Avenue church. Most of the slides pertain to the building of our present church and include the first sign on the empty lot, groundbreaking service, construction of the church and office wing, cornerstone laying ceremony and the dedication service.
The Spengler slides have been scanned into a computer viewing format. They are available as a slideshow above this article. If you would like to view the building specifications, blueprints and building committee notes please contact the church office.
Our thanks to Browning and Spengler families for their donations to our church. If you have items pertaining the history of Christ's Church that you would like to donate please contact the church office.
